Stop, caution, or go. How will you decide which applies to your career change decision?

When you are dissatisfied but not desperate, a career change may be a good decision. To make sure you have done your due diligence, ask yourself these questions as part of your decision-making process:

  • Is this what is really wrong?
  • Am I trying to solve another type of problem by making a change in my career? (Hint: This usually doesn’t work.)
  • Is there an opportunity within my present position that I could pursue and enjoy?
  • Is there an opportunity within my present company  but in a different capacity that I could pursue and enjoy?
  • Is there an opportunity within my field or industry that I could pursue and enjoy?
  • What is the least amount of change I could make that would satisfy the need that is going unmet?
  • What part of my work needs to change the most?
  • What part of my work can remain the same?
  • What are the payoffs and consequences of leaving my present position (but not company)?
  • What are the payoffs and consequences of leaving my present company?
  • What are the payoffs and consequences of leaving my present career?
  • Is this a good time in my life and my family’s life to change my career?
